Opinions
Principal Gary Norbury on what they are grappling with at Hawthorn West PS
Hi Enok
Below are a few thoughts about some of the issues that we are currently
grappling with at Hawthorn West PS.
Our crucial task is to create schools that will cater for students who
will be educated in a post-industrial world. Schools can no longer
afford to prepare students fo fit into a world that existed a decade ago. We
should not want to create the schools that we remember from our
childhoods. We should not be trying to stem the flow of change. Our
basic mission should be to provide quality learning experiences that engage
our students and ensure that the school is a vibrant social system.
Over the next twelve months the issues and challenges that I expect
our school to face and attempt to resolve are:
The emerging science of learning - core purpose
of schools
ICT and its role in the future delivery of
quality learning
Nature of and purpose of schools as they evolve
in the future
Improvement through pedagogy and curriculum
development
Are we providing the optimum opportunities to
maximise learning - if
not, what do we need to change?
Curriculum development, classroom delivery of
engaging activities,
work organization, ways of learning, modes of
assessment
Define and examine current obstacles to student
learning and
effective teaching
Goal congruence enabling change within the
school
Understanding of brain and learning.
We are striving to formulate and develop a planned approach to
strategic change and top maximise the opportunities that may present
themselves as the processes unfold.
Happy to answer any questions you or your colleagues may have.
Cheers Gary
